#1003: The Importance of Kindness

I just heard that one of my favorite comedian Paul Reubens passed away and it reminded me of a quote I once read about his character, Pee-wee Herman. “Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness.”

It brought about two things to me, the importance of kindness, and the necessity for recognizing loss and grief. When I think, “How do I want to be remembered?” I know it is not so much for the things that I did but rather the kindness that I brought to other people.  I know that that helps me continue my path towards living my best act, my third act. Paul Reubens may be remembered for a variety of things as he was a mixed bag like most of us. His kindness hopefully is the thing that will endure.

August always brings to mind the loss of a lot of people in my life, but I know that their kindness towards me formed me and allowed me to be kinder to others.  Small tasks are what it’s all about. Holding the door open for people, parking farther away so others can enjoy a closer parking space and just a tender smile. When I do that, it clears my head so that I can be better than I was before.

Helping people move forward in their lives and showing them the kindness that they may be missing out on so that they can do their next best act is a great source of joy in my life.

Moving forward in times of grief, or any time that one is stuck is never easy but it can be made easier with the help of others.
